About plain language
Plain language is important for clear, accessible and effective communication. As such, it is intimately connected to social justice.
Plain language
- speaks in a friendly, personal way to the intended reader
- uses language appropriate to that reader’s language level, vocabulary and background
- is simple and elegant, using neither too many words nor too few
- reflects a belief that every person can understand even complex ideas–if they are clearly expressed
- ensures fair access to services and ideas, knowledge and rights
- translates knowledge into shared understanding… and from there, into action
- make change possible by allowing people to ‘get’ your message
